Dear Mumpreneur (or Soon-To-Be Mumpreneur)

I’m Tania Usher and I’ve grown my own businesses from a tiny seed in my spare bedroom (only spare because my two young daughters were sharing a room and a double bed) to an internationally acclaimed enterprise I run with my global team from my ocean view office on Australia’s glorious Gold Coast.

I became a Mumpreneur when my first daughter was 10 months old.  When my youngest daughter was just 3 weeks old I co-founded the Whole Woman Festival, an annual International Women’s Day Festival bringing together hundreds of women who share their wisdom on a host of topics including business, relationships, finance, health, sexuality, parenting, environment and general wellbeing.

I wasn’t always entrepreneurial, in fact, 10 years ago when I was pregnant with my first daughter and dragging myself to the office (I suffered terrible morning sickness) I considered myself a success.  I had a JOB and was contributing to the economy like most responsible citizens…but that was all about to change.

When I left my executive career to give birth to my first child…I never imagined that in less than 5 years, I’d bury a baby, be the sole provider of my family, embroiled in an emotionally draining legal battle, witnessing escalating credit card debt and served home repossession papers.

My dream of balancing a JOB and a family were shattered.  This wasn’t my vision of motherhood!  I was frustrated, alone, exhausted…and desperate to find a way to secure the future of my young family.

Then one day it happened…I made a decision that transformed my life.  I did something that some thought foolish…especially as the sole provider of my 2 and 4 year old daughters…I decided to go into business for myself.

Problem was, I didn’t have a plan, or anyone to help me figure things out.

Unfortunately I completely underestimated how important building a solid foundation was to generating clients and ongoing income.

I thought that my years in the executive world had awarded me with all I needed to become a Mumpreneur.  I was wrong!  I was ill-equipped for this new journey called "entrepreneurship".  So I made A LOT of mistakes, some very expensive ones, along the way. I was running myself into the ground raising two young girls, answering phones, attending meetings, replying to emails, marketing, public relations…and my body gave up.  I felt burnt out!  Despite ALL my experience, I had to admit that I didn’t have the first clue about the basics of running a REAL business that could support me both financially and emotionally.

The fact is, it’s tough taking steps to change the direction of your life.  Especially when you’re a busy mum, organising the kids, getting them off to school, rushing to work…only to return home where it all begins again.  Emptying out lunch boxes, sifting through paperwork, making sure the kids do their homework, preparing dinner and rushing through the laundry.

And the scary part is, it seems like everyone depends on you to get things done, like the whole world is riding on your shoulders.

But at some stage you’ve got to ask yourself, if you can’t find time today to change your life, when will you?  If not today then when?

When you’re laying flat on your back with exhaustion…you’re forced to be still and reflect on life.  So the wisest business decision I ever made was to pull out my credit card…it was the only source of funds available to me as my young family was living off credit…and hired a coach who encouraged me to think differently.  Instead of treating my business like an expensive hobby (that wasn’t even covering rent and school fees) I became aware of the qualities and skill sets I needed to Build a Brilliant Business. 

Despite all my experience and education, I realised that to grow a successful business I had to strip back get NAKED…and learn the key business basics.  We all have to start somewhere.  We’re all a beginner once.  But there’s one place to start that will sow the seeds of success…YOU!

This life changing decision led me on a path to support other Mumpreneurs to accelerate the achievement of their personal and professional goals.  Not only has this altered the course of my life and the future of my children it has enabled me to touch the lives of women and children around the world.
